I always reckon they didn't do a Golf estate for 20 years out of respect for the passing of the Variant (Squareback).
It certainly is a noble thought :-)
I will say that the demand was only partly there, but since the Passat had enough sales, it probably wasnt necessary for VW to enter this niche in the market. Now, as the Passat grew larger in the 90's, there was a place for a smaller station wagon for "everyone".Probably more likely they reckoned the demand wasn't there.
I think they've stopped the Lupo now.
They did, the Brasilian Fox has entered the market inplace of the Lupo.
The Polo is really the BeetleIs it? The Golf was originally the car that replaced the Beetle, with the Polo (a rebadged Audi) following nearly 2 years later. It is also the Golf that holds the position as the real people's car in the VW lineup, even today. The close second to the Golf sales is the Passat, which is the true follower of the Type 3 range. Even today's Passat bears the 3 number, it is the Type 3C.
