So it wasn't because the brushes were so tall that the springs were pushing 
sideways on them, rather than inward.

Yes, it's mysterious. It's still possible that there is a wiring problem in the 
car. It could be a wire that's broken, but that's unlikely with stranded wire, 
or a wire could be worn thru so that it was shorting to ground, which also 
seems unlikely.

The cool factor is the main selling point. There's some advantage in the fact 
that everything is in just a single package, so there's never any reason to try 
to figure out which part is at fault when something goes wrong. The down side 
is that when something goes wrong you have no choice other than to just replace 
everything, which is more expensive.

And it's much harder to troubleshoot and repair your own alternator, since they 
contain electronic parts which you probably can't buy separately.
