The Trans has to be unbolted from the crossmember under the bell housing. and the engine and trans jacked up. Then you can get the flange that holds it to the trans clear of the frame. There are several paper gaskets under that flange, of varying thickness used to set end play on the axle tube, so it can pivot freely. The backing plate and brakes will have to be removed, the outer wheel bearing removed. and the shock and spring plate bolts removed. Hold the axle towards the differential while removing the axle tube. Don;t let it slide out, as then the fulcrum plates will get out of position, and the axle itself will then need to be removed, to reinstall them. It is not an easy job. BTW, there should not be any welds on the axle tube, or the shock mount. They are pressed together and pinned orginally. -- Russ Wolfe '71 Fastback AT '66 Fastback MT (IT RUNS) russw@classicvw.org http://www.classicvw.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
