If the clearances are okay and they seal well, then I think facing forward will 
be as good as facing rearward. In your case, it sounds like you should be 
looking around for another good German split boot.

In the case of these swing axle boots, I wouldn't replace them unless they need 
it.The OEM non-split boots are much better than the split type since they are 
more flexible and won't tend to crack. So I'd leave them alone unless they show 
some sign of failure.
