If it was running VERY rich, this could be due to the charging system putting 
out low voltage: The very common worn out VR problem. 

It's possible that running too rich washed down the cylinder walls, leaving 
them unlubricated. This might lead to a ring failure, but I don't know how 
likely that might be. I've never seen it happen.
