My guess is that the 3-wire motor is a single speed, while the 4th wire gives 
you a second speed. I'm not sure when type 3s got a second speed, but it was by 
'68. A single speed motor would be used with the early variable speed system.

That has to be the work of a previous owner. Just poor workmanship, covered 
over carefully....

BTW, I looked at your other photos on the Samba. The blue engine cover is for a 
type 3, the one without the "vent" is not. I don't know beetles, but that's 
what it's probably from. Russ will know.
