[T3] methyl, ethyl or crud-yl
<x-flowed> I ran out of gas leaving the parking lot at work earlier this week.
I had stayed late and was trying to get home before the kids went to
bed. I rushed back inside and considered an offer to syphon gas from a
swing shift worker or use what was on hand. I had been performing pump
testing with pure (histological grade) methanol, but also had 1:1 molar
methanol/water. Finaly there was reagent grade isopropol alcohol (95%
ethanol, 5% methanol). If these were my only options, which should I
have used to get the 2 miles to the gas station?
I haven't followed up on this, but I know ethanol is a standard
octane booster in the winter, so that might be good, but maybe too much
energy and high burning temp. The methanol/water mixture was scary due
to the water, maybe hydro lock the engine and ?? What about the pure
methanol?
I was in a rush, but not so much that I wanted to melt a piston. In
the process of looking for a bucket for syphoning I discovered an old
gas can in the corner of the maintenance area with ~1/3 rd of a gallon.
It was little chunky but seemed like a winner. It got me to the station
and home for bedtime, but I did have to clean out the idle jets the next
day.
Did I realy have another option?
