I think it could but influence it some, but not enough to be
ineffective. That being said the location on the rear cowl is a better
place from an airflow standpoint. The circulation coming off the roof
makes that a high pressure region on the Notch.
I suspect also that VW designed the Notch first and probably built on
what they were doing with the Beetle. When the Square came along you
no longer had this region for the vents and the back panel of the
Square is a terrible place for cooling intakes due to the low pressure
wake behind the car. So they put them on the rear fenders.
I suspect the Fastback utilized economies of scale by using the same
rear fender as the Square, so the cooling ended up the same. The Notch
style probably would have been fine for the Fastback too....but the
rear fenders of the Square were probably better suited for the body
lines they were looking for. Plus the Square style cooling allowed
more trunk space.
