Yes, the main cooling fan is the one and only fan until somewhere in the 70s
when a dash fan was added (I believe.)  The hot air is pushed through a pair
of heat exchangers that are essentially casings around exhaust pipes.  Any
leaks in and around these will send fumes into your car.
