If you want to base platorm numbers for the direct descendants of
"classic designs" then I present you with this:

Beetle/KG (platform 11, 14 etc) -> Today's Golf/Jetta/NB (platform 1J)
Type 3 (platform 31, 34, 36 etc) -> Today's Passat (platform 3B)

So... I could argue that my '03 VW Passat Variant is a direct descendant
of my '73 Fasty, at least as far as strict product lines go. Remember,
the Passat/Dasher replaced the Type 3 in the lineup when its production
run was over.
