BTW, VW had a special alignment tool for centering the hole in the fan shroud to the crank hole in the back of the case. I can't see that this is super important, but I made a guide to do this about 35 years ago. It's just a piece of tubing with appropriate diameters cut into it so that it fits snugly in both the case and the fan housing hole. With this alignment tube in place you then just rotate the fan housing until its stop rests against the appropriate place on the case split. Then tighten all the bolts slowly so that there's no curse on any of the parts. This includes the breather stand bolts, because the stand has to be placed right so that its rear face is co-planar with the rear bolt bosses on the case. The guide probably isn't necessary, but it sure makes it easy to get everything nicely into just the right spot. Keep in mind that the right spot is somewhat important, because that puts the ignition timing reference mark in the right spot. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
