Re: [T3] Engine work
<x-flowed>I'm a computer programmer so I have my powder coating done by the pros
:-) Powder coating is far more resistant to chipping than paint! In
fact, the shop that did my work also did a Jeep...yes, an ENTIRE JEEP!
More than likely the tin will be dented before any paint chips off ;-)
Only takes a day to sandblast the parts and paint them...once they get
around to doing it. See if you can find a local place.
The breather box is affixed just like a stock unit. You REALLY need to
get your hands on a Bentley shop manual if you plan on doing ANY kind of
work yourself. Required tool!
My ignition system is the Compufire Distributorless. Here's more info
on my baby: http://www.icbm.org/erkson/personal/VWSTATS.HTM
Stock fuel pump. There were a couple different units. Don't rightly
know which one I have so someone else will need to chime in on that.
Fan housing isn't painted, nor is the case polished. But they are
things that can be done...
That alternator is THE original! The DDB kit is the creation of Martin
and I based upon my 40amp alternator. I highly recommend it if you're
tired of dealing with the heavier generator and finicky VR. BTW, I read
thru my Compufire instructions and each coil pack draws 6amps...so in
total it's a 12amp draw, thus the need for a 15amp fuse.
I doubt you need an oil cooler. And besides, you would need to set it
up correctly so you don't over-cool the engine. 99% of the setups I've
seen don't take this into consideration. I don't remember what you said
your engine size was.

Toby,
Thank you for the tip on the breather box. Your engine appears to
be the same one shown on the DDB website. In fact it was this engine
that my question was based on. Did they do the powder coating for
you, or do you work there? Not that it matters, I am just curious. I
think that they told me that it would be 125 to have all of my tin
powder coated. I am concerned about fixing the powder coating if my
very exposed engine gets a chip. I know how to touch up paint. And,
at this point I am not sure how long it would take...
Does the breather box sit on top of the original breather stand?
What type of ignition is that?
Your fuel pump looks different from mine what is it?
Is the aluminum fan casing painted?
I won't ask how you like the alternator, from some past posts, it
looks like a heated topic.
As for my thoughts of adding a remote oil cooler, I have heard a lot
of concern raised by this group regarding the fact that my type 3
engine is in a dune buggy without the proper cool air ducting into the
fan.
