That case originally came as a 1600cc '66 dual carb engine. As for what's in it
now, that could be anything.

The problem is that the type 3 engine sucks in the air it uses for cooling
itself at the rear of the engine. In a normal type 3 car, that air is delivered
thru a rubber bellows and comes from a place outside the car where the air is
assured to be cool air.

In a dune buggy, that intake is generally just left open, so it will suck in
whatever air is available at that rear opening. Unfortunately, the air that is
available there may largely consist of warm air which just came out of the
engine cooling and has just exited to either side of the cooling air intake.
The heat from mufflers and exhaust pipes can only make this problem worse.

To get some idea of what this is like, stand behind your buggie on a warm day
while the engine is running after being warmed up, and think about the fact
that the air around your knees is the air that this engine is trying to cool
itself with.

It's tempting to assume that when the car is moving, the hot air won't have a
chance to accumulate back there like that, but that's not at all clear. There's
often a "dead volume" behind the car which is just carried along with the car.
That's the space where the type 3 engine gets its cooling air, and much of the
air that's fed into this volume is the hot air that has just come out of the
cooling system.

It's never clear how bad this situation is, since it will change depending on
the outside air temp, your road speed, and the wind speed/direction. The one
thing you have going for you is that dune buggies seldom accumulate a lot of
miles or hours, so you are likely to lose interest before the damage
accumulates to the point that it requires attention.
