Newer coils are not of the quality of the older ones and can give trouble quickly. That goes for much of the car really - the original VW parts were made to a much higher standard than many manufacturers of 'bread and butter' cars, hence their near-legendary reliability. I use black coils, but my Beetle has a blue (6V) coil. I thought it was important back in the '60s ! Dave.
