Well now I am home, I checked the flex plate bolts and all were tight. I took them out and cleaned and applied locktite just for good measure. Still the same problem. I put the car up on jack stands and put it in gear. I could hear the noise at the left rear wheel. I took it apart and everything was good, wheel bearings were packed and moved with ease. Brakes all tight etc. I then moved to the axl and CVs. I removed the left axl from the tranny and ran the engine, still the same noise, just not as loud. I rotated the shaft in the differential(sp?) and it kinda seemed chunky/clunky/sloppy back and forth but I don't know what it is suppose to sound like? However, when I move the right rear wheel it does not clunk much at all. I removed the shaft that connects the CV joint to the tranny and engages the differential. I inspected the splines and they seemed to have no noticeble wear or markings. The gear oil did not have signs of metal or grit. The CV joints still had plenty grease and moved on the end of the axl shaft fine. Anyone have any ideas? The noise that is made when driving is definitly more noticable when you lightly engage the engine, the more gas/force the less the noise. When you let up you hear this kind of loose rattling/knocking around as the wheels rotate. My local VW mechanic seems to think that I should remove both axles and run the engine, just to rule out any of the CV joints which could make the described sound. And before condeming my tranny.
