You must be doing something wrong. Is it possible that you have the wrong 
cylinder picked out as # 1? Number 1 is the RF cylinder. To find TDC you have 
to use the probe like you've already done, AND also confirm that both valves 
are closed for that cylinder at that time.

Make sure you have the dist drive gear installed correctly. It doesn't go in 
randomly and it goes in differently from a beetle.

The case you use would make no difference in any of this, but, of course, you 
have to re-position the dist drive gear. Getting the drive gear wrong would 
not, however, cause the symptom you describe.
