Old fluid won't make your brakes squishy, but it does tend to promote corrosion 
in the cylinders which can cause all sorts of problems. DoT-5 silicone brake 
fluid avoids most of these problems, but it is quite a bit of work to install 
it correctly and it's expensive. In my opinion, it's well worth it.

I've used DoT-5  exclusively in all my VWs since 1978 and I'd never go back.
