<x-flowed>That's the VIN for my "new" 1970 Variant L.
Yes folks, I finally got it home this past Sunday. It was a pretty long
trip picking it up, but I wont go into any detail about that here. I'll
just say that my Audi pulled strongly, despite a 1780 kg heavy trailer!
Instead, I'll tell you a bit about the car. As mentioned, it is a 1970
Variant L. It was built on Oct. 29 1969, is painted in Tiefseegr?n (Deep
sea green), code L66B. It has a very nice chocolate brown interior. Not
a single rip or tear in either the front or rear seats, or the door/side
panels. The headliner is a bit torn in the rear, and needs a very good
cleaning.
The car has traveled approx. 154.000 kms, but is quite rusty. It has the
typical fender rust (upper rearmost areas on front, lower areas in the
rear), a lot of rust in the left rear inner fender, and some rust in the
front luggage area.
The engine is a regular dual-carb T-code engine, apparently this unit
has only done 25.000 km since rebuild. It start very nice and has a nice
idle when warmed up. The big drawback is a really ugly Monza-style
exhaust system, I'll see if I can do something about that..
Other than the rust, I need to do a brake job on this car, it has a
couple of broken brake lines in the rear, so I guess i'm putting in new
copper lines all around. New rubber hoses would be nice as well. Also
the electrical system needs to be looked at. Currently, it has one tail
light, no front parking lights, only the highbeams work, and both turn
signals and emergency flashers are out of order. I guess that a couple
of relays are shot, in addition to a whole lot of light bulbs. I'm also
going to install an alternator.
So, after the rust, brakes and lights are looked after, I plan to get
some plates on this wagon so I can use it as an extra car for a couple
for years, then it will probably be parted out in favor of my 73 Variant L.
Other plans include a lowered suspension, new rims and tires (I don't
want the stock ones) and maybe get rid of some surface rust and maybe,
if I bother, paint it flat primer red.

I have 2 questions right now, probably a couple more later.
1) Does any of you know the exact lengths of the brake lines all over
the car? Are they included in the microfiche? The modern electronic
catalogue does not include the lengths for such an old car.
2) Is the steering wheel without the horn half-ring correct for the 1970
model year? I'm going to have it replaced by a Nardi wooden steering
wheel, so this wheel will probably be up for sale, if anyone is
interested ;)
