I went out and had another look at the brakes today. What we all suspected was in fact the case. the brakes on the wheel with the new cylinder were adjusted too loose. As everyone said, when I adjusted it the first time and then pressed the pedal, it came out of adjustment and I should have gone back and done it again. I also had to tighten the handbrake cable slightly. The handbrake is now rock solid. I can no longer push the car at all when it is engaged. This is the first time it has really worked since I got the car. The other wheel, BTW, I adjusted several weeks ago. It adjusted very easily then, and as I haven't driven the car since then I have no reason to assume that it needs any more attention. I made a crude attempt at measuring the pedal movement. It is about 2.7 inches. Does this sound reasonable?
