I've been driving these cars for 35+ years and I've never had to replace a generator on one of mine. I have seen a few bad ones, but I've never seen a commutator come apart. I wouldn't expect oil to cause damage like this, but I suppose it is always a possibility. It's possible that your high speed driving is hard on them, but I suspect that it's just bad luck. Keep it up; your luck is about to improve. Polarizarion should not be necessary, but it won't hurt anything if it is done right. Running them like a motor is a very good way to polarize and check them: If they run smoothly they are good; if they run with a jerk once per revolution there is something wrong with the armature windings, but you have to hold it in you hand while you do this to feel for the jerk. What did you do to fix your oil leak? -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
