What can cause > it to not pop out of gear? Broken shift coupling, or the hockey stick, inside the "nose cone" worn so that it could slip out of place. This sometimes leaves the tranny stuck in TWO gears at the same time, which locks things up solid. If this is the case, you may have to lift up the engine/tranny and unbolt the "center" mounts, then pull the whole business to the rear as you unbolt the nose cone. Then you MAY be able to pry the shift rods back into neutral.
