Well I finished fixing my car on Friday and the generator decided to fall apart, one of the copper segments on the comutator fell off and tore apart one of the brush mounts and the comutator wires. I got another generator from the junkyard shortly after, the generator pile is getting high in my basement , I guess I have to get them repaired eventually. Why did this happen ? Did the oil blowing through the generator desolve the glue that holds the copper segments ? My car is fixed, no more oil through the generator. In my experience, I have found that the generator is a weak link in the engine even though it is very easy to service, I have not had a generator that gives me months of troublefree service, maybe it is me or the amount of driving, heck I even burned up the comutator contacts on a Bosch rebuild . I do polarize all my generators and have them run like a motor for a second. All wiring checks out with no shorts or load, the 'new' generator seems to working fine right now .
