After this, does it have normal power?

Do you have the complete 72 FI system including the ECU, other than the dist? 

Do you have the 72 intake air distributor? If so, it has ports for both vacuum 
advance and retard. Are you using the right one?

These sound fine.

Have you measured the charging system voltage? At med rpm after a warmup drive 
the voltage across the battery should be 14.1-14.4V If it is lower than 13.5V 
replace the voltage regulator with a genuine Bosch.

This is Jim in Chicago, right? Care to drive it up here sometime? Sometimes 
it's just really hard to figure these things out long distance.
