> There's something weird about either me or the > oil: when I stick my finger in the hole, I can't feel the oil, but it comes > out covered in it. I've noticed that before too. I might expect it to be because the temp of finger and oil are the same, but that's unlikely in the UK at any time, even if it happens at times in other countries. Expanded polystyrene feels warm even when you hold you hand near without touching. Could it be that the oil has a very low thermal conductivity and/or capacity? It seems a bit surprising that it would be that low. Odd that quite a few people claim that synthetic doesn't carry away as much heat as mineral oil. Maybe there is something in that claim, or maybe we're used to water cooling us a certain amount and oil has a much lower heat capacity so warms to our temp quickly. Maybe the chemical additives react with the skin and produce a small amount of heat. If you put some glycerol in your mouth it feels warm (as most alcohols do I guess) so it may be a reaction with the moisture on the skin after all. Something for a science project, looking for a small temp change when water is added to transmission oil? I've run out of ideas - anyone else got any? Dave.
