I have a 1500S engine in my '64 Sedan... I recently acquired the real owners manual and it states that the 1500S engine was designed to run on premium gasoline. Is this still recommended after all these years and how many of you on the list with this particular engine still follow this?

If you still have the original domed pistons in the engine then yes, it needs higher octane fuel to avoid knocking due to the high compression. If the engine has been rebuilt it's likely that that flat topped pistons were used which would lower compression to the point that it can run on regular fuel. Actually this configuration was an option on 1500S engines from the factory, and some Type 3s originally headed to North America were outfitted this way. My 1500S Square is one of these but it still wants to knock a little unless I run it on premium.

Bottom line, if you don't have a problem with detonation you're probably o.k.
