We needed the highest octane available at the time, eg Esso Golden Extra, for our 1500S as it knocked on lower octanes. Don't forget, when timing these models you have to remove one or two plug leads to drop idle rpm below the start of the advance curve. Maybe people don't do that and so effectively retard the ignition a bit, which would help. I hope I've worked that out right!. If not, they didn't do it so that's why it knocked! Dave.
