The plastic on the bottom of the regulator might have started to burn. I had the same sort of situation earlier this year on my Fastback, the D+ wire came off the generator and started shorting out. I noticed smoke coming from under the dash, but it turns out it was just clouding under there from the plastic on the regulator getting too hot.
