This needs more investigation. Yesterday for a couple of seconds so much
smoke came out that I actually thought the engine had caught fire somehow.
It stopped smoking when I released the throttle. It doesn't hesitate, miss,
backfire, bang or do anything else untoward when it's in neutral. It sounds
fine. Last time I drove it it missed on a hill. It's hard to say whether it
smokes only when the throttle is opening or whether it is all the time that
is it running at high rpm.

At least that's easy to test.

If only I were so optimistic!

More than once (it's a long story). Yes the chokes work, as far as I can
see.
