If it has good power when you drive it, then the mech adv is probably fine. If 
it runs rich all the time the throttle is open then this doesn't sound like the 
accelerator pump, which could make it be rich for that moment that the throttle 
is actually opening.

Black smoke is often just carbon dislodged from the engine/exhaust when you get 
more flow thru there, so it's possible that the problem is actually too rich a 
mixture at idle. It's also possible that you just haven't had a chance to blow 
all the old carbon and rust out of there yet and maybe you've actually got 
everything working right.

Otherwise, I'd suggest that you check your jet sizes and make sure that nothing 
has unscrewed itself since the last time you were in there.

I assume you've already rebuilt these carbs and that the chokes are working.
