I once read a press statement from VW saying that all VW engines made after 1947 and all Audi engines made after 1970 wouldnt see any side effects from unleaded fuel. This was written somewhere around 88-89, the time when catalytic converters made their appearace in Europe and "leaded" fuel was becoming more and more out of style. On a side note, I have driven my square over 80k kms on unleaded with no side effects.10/15/2002 6:49:05 AM, Jim Adney <jadney@vwtype3.org> wrote:
It's possible that there is a minor problem with some of the early valves, but I think everything since about 70 will be fine.
When I bought my '65 T1, it had the original 40hp in it. I ran it
strictly on unleaded (no leaded gas available, couldn't afford fake lead) and when I finally tore the engine down, the valves were just fine. The main bearings on the other hand.... =(
