I took my '63 Squareback to be aligned yesterday. The tech. drove it into the shop and refused to align it, saying there was something wrong with the brakes because the driver's front locked up on him. I showed him, no, the wheel spins if you jack it up. We had a discussion and he showed me that rocking the driver's wheel back and forth produced a "clunk". He suggested the upper ball joints. I said ok and drove home. At home, I found the clunk was loose front wheel locknuts, I must have left them a little loose in all my removing and installing. Anyway, I had noticed that my driver's upper ball joint boot had popped off, I guess the safety wire had broken at some point before my purchase. The boot is perfect. I pulled the boot back and there was zero grease in there and it looks damaged. I removed it tonight, here's a photo: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/scrapbook/63variant/10152002/badballjoint.jpg Damaged may be an understatement. ;) If anyone has a photo of a good or new ball joint, I'd be interested to know what it looks like under the boot for comparison. I will be replacing in any case. -- Everett Barnes '63 Squareback ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
