The late model heads have the rocker mounting studs screwed into the head right below the rocker arm. The early versions had a stud that was about 3"-4" long that the threaded portion was buried that far into the head. When the old heads expanded in the heat, the steel stud didn't expand as much, therefore the valve lash closed up as the engine got hotter. the later heads, the rocker arms moved with the head with heat expansion. There was a modification to the early heads that converted them, and most of them were converted over time. BTW, September 64 was the beginning of the 1965 model year. -- Russ Wolfe '66 FB MT (It drove) '71 FB AT '65 Bug (not running) russw@classicvw.org http://www.classicvw.org ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
