The factory octane recommendation is a MINIMUM recommendation, so you 
can use anything above that without concern or adjustment.

It's not more "potent" it just has a greater resistance to knock (detonation, 
pre-ignition, etc.)

The manuals all tell you to remove the hose(s) but there's no reason to if this 
has no effect at idle, where you're setting the timing. You can easily test this 
yourself by just pulling off the vac advance hose while the car is idling. I 
suspect that you'll hear no change in idle speed.

When low lead gas was first introduced, there was concern about damage to 
valve seats and guides from the lack of lead. It turns out that this applies 
only to those cars which have the seats and guides made of cast iron, or 
have those parts cut straight out of the cast iron head. None of these 
concerns apply to any VW since about 1966. You are free to use lead free 
gas in your 69.
