It would be worthwhile to try another known good 72 pressure sensor, just to
eliminate that as a possiblity.

These symptoms are also consistent with lean running. It might be useful to
rig up your own pressure gauge so you can see what the fuel pressure is
doing. Have you checked the voltage on the output of the fuel pump relay? I
have seen several of those which get resistive and then the pump can't
deliver full output.

You might try checking the timing at home, just to see what your mechanic
did. He may have done it by ear just to get it out of the shop. This would be a
bad sign for him, but would tell you that one of the "defective" parts you have
been dealing with is your mechanic. I wouldn't judge him poorly unless you
find the timing mark to be off by more than 1/4".

The AAR is just to the right of the distributor. It is NOT your problem. It
certainly could be the pressure sensor. Someone here may have one, but
your best bet would be if there was a listee near you with another 72 that
would let you trade sensors for a quick drive, just to see if that made a
difference. While I may have one in the basement, I can't be completely sure
that it's a good one without putting it on a running 72. I don't know any other
way to test them.
