You're making this much too hard. Just take the dist out and do whatever you need to do. LOOK at the bottom of the dist and down inside the case. You'll see a drive dog and a slot that can engage only ONE WAY. Push the dist in the case until it hits bottom, then exert light pressure while turning the rotor until you feel the dist drop an extra 3/16" into position. Push it down firmly into place and tighten things up.
