Thanks all for the advice.
If this is too cool, I think I should stop worrying! Its just that  my
engine seemed a lot hotter than I remember from a few months ago. I guess I
was running way too rich before and too cool- would explain the terrible
mileage I've been getting. Hope the new carbs correct this.

 It was one of these that I was using- a cheap one but it seems pretty
accurate, and is really handy, though the readings really vary depending on
how you aim it / angle to the surface being measured. Overall I feel I trust
a thermocouple type more.
