If you have a series of devices, each with an input and an output signal and 
you link them all in a chain, and then you connect the output of the last 
device back to the input of the first device then you have "closed the loop."

This creates a feedback system which will work to keep some parameter 
fixed at a desirable value, if you have all the gains and phases right.
