<x-charset iso-8859-1>This is interesting, after market manufactures sell a dash pad for the 1964 to 1973 type 3. So why would the 71-73 model years have a different dash pad? I've looked at probably 20 different parts car's ranging from a 66 to a 73 fastback and all of the dash pads looked the same. I would imagine the newer 1970-73 dash pad was some what thinner (save production costs), but still cracked in about the same place. If cost is an issue a used dash pad is a good option but could have some pit falls. Over time the pad will become brittle and is shaped to the contour of the original dash, removing it and reinstallation in a different car may cause the pad to crack or a distorted fit, then what? I couldn't tell you why you would have to get new gages or modify what you have because I believe all the critical dimensions from year to year are the same. A better option may be a new after market dash pad, if you take your time during the installation (most come with instructions) it's fairly easy and will be a good fit and look, plus give you years of service. Just some thought and experiences. Good Luck Jim S. Is there ANY variation in square vs. notch vs. fastback? No, no. The 71-3 dash pad is different from the earlier one. It might be forced into place, but it will be different. It is also a different thickness where the instruments go in, so you would need to get different instruments, or modify what you have. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org </x-charset>
