I'm not sure about the early years, but I think there were actually 3 or 4 different dashes total, not counting RHD or color variations. 71-3 have a separate grill/insert over the speaker. 67(?)-70 have small perforations in a diamond pattern with an unperforated stripe down the middle. I think others have mentioned that even earlier cars lack the central blank stripe. 67-70 have some brackets and screws up by the windshield that the later ones do not use. Up thru 70 the pad is thicker where the instruments fit. If you put a late panel with early instruments the early instruments will be loose and may get their grounds only intermittently. This will make some things only work intermittently, like the instrument lights and (maybe) the gas gauge. Sure you can get away with it, and that's what the aftermarket people do, but it's not an exact fit, and it comes with compromises. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
