I had tried adjusting them after I noticed a problem with the contacts but
that didn't help.  They were pitted pretty bad, too.  The new set of points
adjusted just fine.  They may have been sticking (as you mentioned).  I did
see notice the plastic cap that rides the dizzy shaft was pretty much shot.

On my wires, one end has a VERY short brass nose and the other has a long
brass nose, so I guess I reversed the ends by mistake when I was fiddling
around.  (Both ends have an identical rubber grommet).
