I think part of the trick is the adjustment after installing the new thermostat. We've talked about this in the past. The Bentley procedure presumes that the engine accessories are partially disassembled -- namely, that you can actually physically get to the flap, and measure a... was it 1mm? gap when the flaps are in the fully-closed position. Note that once adjusted, you can mark an exposed portion of the flap rod to indicate the closed position.
