It most likely means that the pistons are starting to get sticky in there and 
you have some rebuilds in your future.

Let us know how this works. It's a continuing problem....

You can replace it simply, from below as you suggest. Don't worry about the 
rod; it doesn't move far.

I have a replacement scheme for the little plastic hinge covers that everyone 
was missing. When these are gone the hinges rattle and the windows don't 
seal well. Set of 4, makeshift but functional: $12, including shipping.
