My Squareback runs at about 170-180 with normal driving, but takes awhile to warm up. I have all warm up pieces intact and the car is all stock '66 1600. I bought a 6v VDO temp gauge on ebay and it seems to work well. My beetle, on the other hand, has a 1641 in it and has run at about 220-240 degrees (with freeway driving) since the engine was built two years ago. I drive it daily and have driven it across country twice (two round trips). That temp. used to make me worry when I first built it, but hasn't had a bad effect on the engine so far. My guess that the gauge is not accurate, but it is a brand new VDO (made in Mexico) gauge. Is that temp too high? Would I notice decreased performance if that really is the temp? Squareback runs much cooler, although everyone talks about type threes having cooling problems. I don't see how with their larger fan and the amount of cfm's they put out. -Yancy Everhart '66 Squareback '66 Sunroof Beetle ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
