Berg measured a lot of samples of a lot of new gauges and found that you couldn't depend on any brand to read accurately. His dipstick warning sensor are made to trip at 100C/212F so that you can calibrate it in boiling water any time you want. This is a test you could do also. I think that Berg found that a temp below this, measured at the dipstick point, was safe, and that a higher temp was usually cause for worry. If your gauge is uncalibrated, or taking its measurement at a different point, then all bets are off. In general, I believe that 220-240 is higher than we'd like to see, but I don't have any first hand data on this. My personal take on type 3 cooling is that most of it comes from people who don't know, like, or understand, type 3s. I've never seen a problem, unless there are cooling system parts disabled or something else has been done to conpromise the engine or cooling system. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
