You might as well go ahead and poke it with a sharp object to see if it breaks thru. I know this seems brutal, but you are better off knowing. > this rust must all stem from the many years this tank laid empty at > Jane terrys farm in Kent it is an early filler under bonnet type so it wont have > been water ingress. Yes, water condenses as dew in an empty tank and then settles on the bottom, even if there is some gas there. If the tank is empty a lot of air flushes in and out with barometric changes and this brings in more humidity with every "breath." When the tank is full, there is much less air and moisture exchange with the outside. > I may take it out and paint the outside with an epoxy based paint to > afford a extra level of security against it leaking on me. Right, it may just be normal surface rust that you see on the outside. Por-15 might be a good choice there once you clean it up. > I to Jim am very wary of putting anything other than fuel in my tank at > least if I do decide to por 15 it there is no trough to fill up in the bottom a > la injection . Yes, you're right, there's much less to screw up in the early tanks. Even so I think we agree about coating the inside with something. I've just heard too many horror stories about the coating flaking off in a few years and giving more problems than the original rust. This was probably NOT Por-15, but who knows what it will do 5 years down the road. > if I could find a second tank then id snap it up. I have several good FI tanks here, but that's no help for your '66 in Germany. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
