Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what we're talking about here, but you really don't want to put any kind of filter on the suction side of the oil pump. This will lead to cavitation within the pump and oil starvation of the engine. It's a genuinely BAD thing. Pontiac may put theirs so it looks like it sits in the pan, but you can be sure that it is connected to the pressure side of the pump. Some of the other comments I have been seeing on this thread made me think that they were talking about the pump/filter bases that install as one piece and seem to provide a rather simple & clean full flow filter installation. These also have a major drawback in that they place the filter right in the middle of the HOT AIR as it leaves the engine.
