[T3] Carlisle and a surprise!

Im back from Imports at Carlisle... Awesome Opel turnout, 24!, but the VW showing was
generally pitiful with a couple notable exceptions. Alot of STRANGE cars, cars that Ive never seen
the bottom 6 inches of, cars that there should be a law against creating, and some fine examples of
machinery too.

The notable exceptions were Ron Mann's immaculate 70 Square with 15K orig miles on it. and guess
what?? an SP2!!

OK,, this is the second SP2 Ive ever seen, and I probably spent more time looking under the car than
over it. I really dont think these should be classified as a Type3, not that I dont think they look
AWESOME and Id dream of owning one but heres what I noticed:

This car was in very nice shape, restored nicely but not without its flaws. The floor pan, the
basis I feel for classifing a car a particular "type" I feel; was not a T3 pan, but a bastardized
version that not only had a T1 framehead but lacked the rigidity strips that run front to 2/3 back
under the seats on each side. The ribbing was also similar but different. As we probably all know
the front suspension is T1 torsion bars, and the rear is swing.. T1 or 3?? probably T3 as it had
that stabilizer bar my old 67 did. The engine IS T3... but with some notable differences that werent
all internal, the exaust is different as are the heater boxes... not 46mm flange nuts here but there
were rear heater boxes and of course that all coveted Alternator.

So.. T3?? I think not... probably classified as "One of those Brazillian things" better. Of course
thats only my opinion and Id love to have one in my garage nestled between the square and the Notch
anyway..
