When I worked at the dealers during the '60's and '70's, one of my jobs was
 to do the A/C installations.
There are many problems with A/C on a Type 3:
You break the integrity of the cooling system.
You add heat load to the engine on days when the engine is already running
 hot.
It makes the engine harder to work on.
It makes it almost impossible to get to anything under the dash.
You have to cut big holes in the front fenders to install the condensors.

There also was a saying among the VW mechanic's in this area, "If you want a
luxury car, buy a Cadillac. If you want dependable transportation, buy a
 Volkswagen."

I hafta disagree with Russ. If you want A/C on a Type 3, get it from Jerry
West, European Cooler Air, 2724 Highway 552, Rockwall, Texas Phone
972-771-3791.
And find yourself an extension for the crankshaft (VW's solution to the
problem). You
can advertise for one on www.oroad.com/volkswebbin.

The engine of my Type 34 Ghia doesn't run hot. Of course, mine has a new boot
around the back of the engine compartment. You buy one from RMMW at a cost of
about $30. Sure, it makes the engine harder to work on. You've added a
compressor and hopefully a two-belt set up to the crankshaft. You don't want
to reach anything under the dash, anyway. That's A/C men's work. And you
don't need to cut holes in the front fenders, if you install the condensers
beneath the car (you will hafta beware
of using a floor jack because of this).

A good A/C system is good this time of year.
