I've now received a sketch of the reinforcement. It's pretty obviously just side impact protection - a wide U-channel of varying width stiffening the inner section below the window line, from front to rear of the door, with a bracket at the front to link it to the inner and outer door frame. Don't ask me where the "flat panels" or "upper frame" descriptions came from. Shame - I thought this sounded like something quite unusual, though I've yet to look inside my 73 doors, so maybe they have this too. I can quite believe a mod like one-piece windows wouldn't slip in easily, but I assume the normal window channels and regulator works in this door - the mechanic doubted it. Dave.
