I just recently took apart the engine in my 1200 Beetle, after it started making a rod knock noise. The cam gear was pretty beaten up, about 1/2 the teeth had the corners chipped off them and it was amazing the engine was still running. I suspect that some of the debris from the conrod bearing got caught in the gears and chewed them off. The gear on the crank was fine however. This engine had 139,000 miles on it, and as far as I know had never been rebuilt. It does sound strange that the cam just 'self destructed' though, so there might have been something wrong with it when you put it in. Good luck on your rebuild!
